Fine-tuning can significantly improve chatbot quality, but it is not always the best or most cost-effective approach. In many cases, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) is a better starting point.

What Exactly Is Fine-tuning?

Fine-tuning versus RAG: When to Use Which?

RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) is a technique where the chatbot retrieves relevant documents from a knowledge base with each question and sends them as context to the model. The model then generates an answer based on that context. The big advantage: you do not need to retrain the model when information changes, you simply update the knowledge base.

Fine-tuning makes sense when you want to change the model's behavior: how it communicates, the structure of answers, the use of specific terminology, or following internal processes. RAG makes sense when you want to give the model access to current, changing information.

Step two is the training itself. Modern fine-tuning techniques like LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation) make it possible to adapt a model with limited computing capacity and in a fraction of the time traditional fine-tuning requires. A typical fine-tuning run takes 2 to 8 hours depending on dataset size.

Step three is evaluation. Compare the performance of the fine-tuned model with the base model on a test set not used during training. Look not just at text quality but also at factual correctness, consistency, and adherence to the configured guidelines.
